As internet usage grows, so does the need for web mail hosting. Email is often used for malware attacks, with about 35% of all malware in 2023 coming through email. At the same time, more personal information and data are being shared online. This situation greatly increases the risks for individuals, businesses, and organizations.

Deciding if your business should opt for mail hosting or only web hosting can greatly influence how you connect with people and how they view your business online.

This article will help clear up any confusion about these two options. We’ll explore both mail hosting and web hosting, highlight their differences, and discuss when you might need one over the other.

By the end of this guide, you’ll have a clearer idea of how to align your hosting choices with your business goals.

What is Mail Hosting?

Also known as email hosting, this service is tailored to manage your email communications. Unlike common email providers like Gmail or Yahoo, webmail hosting allows you to use a custom domain for your email addresses.

This means you can switch from a standard address like yourname@gmail.com to something more professional like yourname@yourdomain.com, which is great for enhancing your business image.

Webmail hosting usually isn’t free, which distinguishes it from typical services. On the upside, it offers premium features that you won’t get from free email providers.

Benefits of Dedicated Mail Hosting

Dedicated mail hosting can have several advantages that can significantly enhance the way your business communicates and operates.

Here are some of its key benefits:

Enhanced Brand Consistency

One of the most notable benefits of dedicated webmail hosting is the improvement in brand consistency. By using your domain name in your email addresses, you create a more professional appearance. This helps eliminate any confusion for potential clients or customers and strengthens your brand’s image.

Increased Security

When it comes to security, dedicated hosting for web mail typically includes spam and virus filtering services that keep your inbox safe and secure. Knowing that your communications and sensitive business information are protected can give you peace of mind.

Expanded Storage Space

Storage space is a common concern with free email services, particularly for businesses that need to keep records of all communications. Dedicated webmail hosting addresses this issue by providing more storage space for each email account.

This way, you can retain important emails without frequently clearing out your inbox.

Seamless Connectivity for Multiple Email Addresses

Most businesses require more than one email address to handle different aspects of their operations, such as customer support, information requests, and staff communications.

Dedicated mail hosting makes it easy to manage and connect all these different emails under one professional umbrella.

Scalability and Performance

Paid webmail hosting is designed to grow your business. Whether you need to add more email addresses, increase storage capacity, or require enhanced customer support, webmail hosting can scale to meet these needs.

Now that we know about mail hosting, let’s tackle what web hosting is and explore the different types.

What is Web Hosting?

Web hosting is an essential service that makes your website available on the internet. By signing up for a hosting plan, you are essentially renting space on a server. This server holds all your website’s files and data, making it possible for people around the world to access your site at any time.

Usually, a hosting provider offers space on their servers to website owners. These servers have the technology and resources needed to keep your site healthy and performing well.

Web hosts take care of the servers where your websites are stored. They handle complex tasks like ensuring the server is always up, securing the site, and managing data transfers.

They deal with these technical details so your website can consistently serve texts, photos, and other files to your visitors without any issues.

Types of Web Hosting

Understanding the different types of web hosting can help you find the right service for your website.

Shared Hosting

In shared hosting, several websites share the same server and its resources like RAM and a processor. This is the most budget-friendly option out of all the web hosting types, making it great for small businesses, beginners, and hobbyists.

However, sharing server resources with other websites can sometimes slow down your own site.

Dedicated Hosting

Dedicated hosting allows you full control over your server. You have administrative and root access, letting you install your chosen security tools and operating systems.

It offers more power and privacy but is more costly and requires technical expertise to manage.

Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting

VPS hosting splits a server into multiple dedicated sections, each acting as an independent server with its own resources. Think of it as in between shared and dedicated hosting.

This type of hosting reduces performance problems, making it ideal for small businesses that need more control but have a limited budget. However, VPS might not be enough for very large online stores or heavily trafficked media sites.

Cloud Hosting

Cloud hosting uses virtualization technology to pull resources from multiple servers in the cloud. This type of hosting is very flexible, letting you adjust resources as needed.

It’s excellent for businesses with fluctuating traffic levels and those that don’t require a lot of technical knowledge.

Cloud hosting is cost-effective and can quickly adjust to spikes in traffic by automatically scaling resources.

Specialized Hosting Solutions

For websites that run on WordPress, specialized WordPress hosting provides an optimized environment that enhances its performance and security. These plans often include pre-installed themes and plugins for key functions.

Additionally, reseller hosting allows for the wholesale purchase of hosting services and reselling them to retail customers. This is usually done by web designers and developers who handle sites for multiple clients.

Key Differences Between Mail Hosting and Web Hosting

Let’s now discuss the distinctions between web hosting and mail hosting. While both are important for businesses, they serve different purposes and have specific features tailored to meet different needs.

Purpose and Focus

Mail hosting is designed to manage email communications between a business and its subscribers. It aims to provide a dependable service that handles email traffic efficiently and securely. This type of hosting often includes features such as spam protection and secure data transfer.

On the other hand, web hosting focuses on storing the contents of a website. It allows businesses to publish their websites online, which helps increase their visibility and reach.

Technical Aspects

Web hosting involves storing and managing websites on server computers provided by hosting companies. These services are crucial for the performance, reliability, and security of a website. They ensure that a website is always available to users and runs smoothly, handling traffic without downtime.

In contrast, mail hosting offers a personal email domain that can be linked with a website for streamlined communication. This service is vital for the security and accessibility of email accounts and messages, focusing on private and professional email communication rather than public web content.

Connection and Interaction

Web hosting creates a connection between businesses and customers, facilitating access to products, services, and company information. It plays a direct role in how a company is perceived online and can significantly impact customer engagement and sales.

Email hosting, however, enhances communication between the sender and the receiver. It ensures that emails are not only sent but are also well-received and free from delays or security threats, making it indispensable for effective business communication.

Plans and Pricing

Regarding plans and pricing, web hosting offers a range of options that vary based on storage, bandwidth limits, and additional features. This flexibility allows businesses to choose a plan that best fits their web traffic and data needs.

Email hosting also provides various plans but focuses more on the number of email accounts and storage for emails rather than bandwidth.

Using Web Hosting and Email Hosting

After going over the fundamentals, let’s tackle a common question: Is it necessary to use both web hosting and email hosting simultaneously?

The answer depends on your specific needs.

Assessing Your Requirements

If your goal is simply to establish a website without the need for emails under the same custom domain, then web hosting alone is enough. Your site will already be functional and accessible on the internet.

However, if your needs are limited to managing email accounts, then opting for just email hosting will meet your requirements.

For businesses aiming to set up a professional online presence with a website and custom email addresses for talking to customers and partners, it’s crucial to have both web and email hosting.

You can choose these services from different providers or pick one provider that offers both in a single package, whichever works best for you.

Shared Web and Email Hosting

Using the same provider for both website and email hosting can save you money and simplify the setup process.

Many providers offer bundled deals that are cost-effective and include managed services to handle the technical aspects for you. This can be a great choice if you’re seeking a straightforward, budget-friendly solution.

However, if your business demands a more robust email and web hosting system with advanced features and you have the budget and personnel to manage it, opting for separate hosting services might be more beneficial.

When to Consider Separate Hosting for Email and Websites

Taking all the information above into consideration, here’s a guide to understanding when it might be beneficial to opt for separate hosting services.

1. Efficiency and Space Considerations

Combining both web and email hosting into one package can be budget-friendly and convenient for smaller businesses. But the main drawback of this approach lies in the limited storage and slower speeds.

Since the server’s resources are divided between website and email functions, you might find yourself needing to frequently delete emails to free up space, potentially losing important historical data.

2. Enhanced Performance with Dedicated Hosting

Using separate hosting for emails and websites can enhance performance. With dedicated hosting, each service email or web will have its resources. Additionally, each server can be optimized for its specific task, leading to faster processing times and increased security.

3. Advances in Cloud Hosting

Recent developments in cloud hosting have simplified the process of managing dedicated servers for both email and web services. Cloud platforms offer robust backup solutions so that your data remains safe even in the event of hardware failure.

Recovery of lost data is also more straightforward and quicker with the cloud. This technology allows each server to operate more efficiently and with less strain, enhancing overall functionality.

Important Note: We Don’t Offer Email Hosting

To be clear, GreenGeeks doesn’t offer email hosting, and there are reasons behind that.

First, we don’t want to spread our technology and resources thin by providing both web and email hosting. Providing email hosting on top of our web hosting can also present challenges.

For instance, integrating email services directly with our server setup could potentially delay regular server maintenance tasks such as backups and real-time malware scanning. These processes are critical for maintaining the integrity and performance of hosted websites.

When a server is tasked with handling both website and email data, it can strain the system, leading to slower response times and less efficient data processing.

FAQs about Mail Hosting and Web Hosting

Do I need separate providers for mail hosting and web hosting?

It’s not necessary, but you may choose separate providers if you require specialized services in either area for better performance and features.

Which is more expensive: mail hosting or web hosting?

The cost of these two hosting services varies based on the provider and the specific features offered. In general, dedicated mail hosting can be cheaper than web hosting if purchased alone.

What should I look for in a mail hosting provider?

Look for features like ample storage, strong security measures, spam protection, and reliable customer support.

What features are important in a web hosting service?

Essential features include uptime reliability, bandwidth and storage capacity, security options, and technical support.

Can I host a website and an email on the same server?

Yes, many web hosting services allow you to host both your website and email on one server. But before doing so, you have to make sure that the server can handle both without performance issues.

Is managed web hosting worth the extra cost?

For businesses that do not have the IT expertise to manage a server, managed web hosting is beneficial as it frees up resources and reduces technical challenges.

How do bandwidth needs differ between mail hosting and web hosting?

Web hosting generally requires more bandwidth than mail hosting due to the larger size of website data compared to emails.

What is the impact of downtime in web hosting vs. mail hosting?

Downtime in web hosting can make your website inaccessible. In mail hosting, downtime can delay sending and receiving emails.

How can I migrate my website or emails to a new host?

Many hosting providers offer migration services or tools to help you move your site or emails seamlessly without losing data.

Final Thoughts

In this article, we’ve covered the basics of mail hosting and web hosting, highlighting their key differences to help you decide which service is best for your business.

Whether you need mail hosting to manage a large volume of secure emails, or web hosting to support a strong online presence, understanding these options is vital.

Are you ready to boost your business’s communication and online presence with the right hosting solution? Think about what your business specifically needs, how big it is, and what kind of security you require. Now is the perfect time to choose a hosting service that will help your business move forward.

On April 21st, we turn 10 years old!

Ten years. Wow! I’m going to let that sink in for a moment.

In 2008, Trey founded GreenGeeks with a vision to not only become the best web hosting platform available but also create an organization that led the change in being environmentally friendly. I loved the vision Trey had and although we have known each other for years online – we had never met! In 2009, we took a chance together, and I joined the company, we finally met 6 months after starting the company. Together, we had a sense of renewed excitement for the vision of being the World’s #1 Green Energy Web Hosting Provider. Since then, we have grown to become one of the largest web hosting providers servicing over 300,000 websites to customers in over 150 countries globally.

Like many startups, it was just a small team of us at the beginning. Soon thereafter, we started to put together the pieces to handle the growth that we were experiencing and haven’t looked back since. We have gradually reached to a superlative team of more than 75 — all of which work together harmoniously remotely from all around the globe. This is something not all companies can do, and do well. We have come a long way since it was just Trey and I. It’s almost surreal.

In the last 10 years, GreenGeeks has made the INC 5000 Fastest Growing Companies in America four years in a row. We’ve been recognized by the United States EPA as a Green Power Partner, have been mentioned in countless editorials, have sponsored dozens of community events such as DrupalCon, WordCamp and have given back to various charities and humanitarian efforts around the globe.

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of GreenGeeks, I feel really proud and blessed when I look back at the journey of all that we have accomplished as a company in these significant and remarkable years. GreenGeeks has gone through a lot of ups and a few downs in all of these years and has emerged as one of the top web hosting providers in the world.

While looking back is fun, looking forward is what really thrills us.

The entire team here at GreenGeeks is excited about the next stage of our company; the next 10 years. We have been working hard to provide a better web hosting platform that empowers bloggers, web developers, and small businesses. You will see new innovative products & services, and see more value from GreenGeeks as we progress into the next decade.

Thank you for choosing GreenGeeks as your web hosting platform of choice. We really do appreciate it and we look forward to serving you for many years to come.

Cheers to another 10 years.

Sincerely,

Over the holidays, our system admins were busy behind the scenes launching a new application known as WordPress Protect, which provides for more robust protection for WordPress websites. WordPress Protect joins our ever growing security suite which is part of our new hosting platform.

The Issue

With WordPress accounting for over 30% of the total websites on the internet, it has become a significant target for malicious activity. In fact, back in 2013, our industry faced one of the largest and well organized targeted attacks to WordPress installations utilizing an attempt known as Brute Force.

Unfortunately, WordPress does not have built-in protection against these types of attacks and so we worked to develop custom ModSecurity rules and in 2016 developed a rudimentary CAPTCHA-based system to aid in slowing down these malicious attacks.

This process allowed our system administrators to take action to limit the impact to our customers and their legitimate traffic while protecting their websites. Unfortunately, as a side-effect caused confusion by introducing a second login prompt which our customers understandably didn’t care for. This forced us to actively work on a cleaner solution behind the scenes.

The Solution: WordPress Protect

It’s with that effort that our system administrators in conjunction with some of our third-party vendors managed to create what we feel is a superior solution that not only better protects our customers but has also helped to reduce overall server load resulting in a faster & more stable hosting experience for all customers.

During 2017 we actively tested the new solution on a small segment of our network and found that our WordPress Protect suite filtered out over 180,000 attempts daily (a little over 54 million attempts per month) while reducing page load times by up to 13% due to the filtering occurring pre-connection to the customers’ website.

Our findings were further verified after receiving praise from our customers:

“It’s comforting to see that our website is being pro-actively protected against brute force attacks, especially since it doesn’t impede on our day to day.”

“In the past, whenever there was an attack I would have to use the annoying captcha to log into my WordPress site. Now the blocks are happening without me even knowing.”

“I have resorted to using plugins that block these types of attacks, but since you all have activated WordPress Protect, I have seen a decrease in attempts via the plugin stats and decreased page load speeds. Win-win.”

So How Does It Work?

WordPress Protect is automatically enabled for every hosting account on our platform and does not require customers action to enable/disable the protection.

Our system will track failed login attempts over a specified timeframe using a quota-based system for the following pages: xmlrpc.php and wp-login.php. In the event that a connection fails to login 10 times (across our entire network), we will begin to throttle that connection, where page loads will take 30 seconds. Those connections that do not fail, will not be throttled.

So to put it into layman’s terms, if there is a brute force attempt happening anywhere on our network, our system will automatically shut them down while you, the legitimate user will continue to use your website without issue.

What’s to come

As we work to evolve WordPress Protect, we will bring additional features that will allow customers to have greater control of how connections are filtered for their hosting accounts.

We look forward to hearing more positive feedback from our customers as we continue to enhance and expand our security suite options. Feel free to comment below.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you’ve most certainly have heard about Hurricane Harvey and the devastation it has caused in Houston, Texas and the surrounding areas.

The Impact

Hurricane Harvey dumped an estimated 27 trillion gallons of water on Texas and Lousiana and is looking to be one of the most damaging natural disasters in U.S history. Tens of thousands have been forced to evacuate their homes and while we won’t know the ultimate toll on life and property for sometime, current estimates are pegging $75 billion dollars worth of damage — even worse, the death toll continues to rise.

The Impact to GreenGeeks

The impacts of Hurricane Harvey hits close to home for GreenGeeks, a rather large portion of our team is located in Texas, particularly in Houston — good news is that our team has been accounted for and is safe. Our decision to diversify our staff across the globe meant that we were able to continue to support our customers during a disaster, albeit, slower than normal.

Climate Change

GreenGeeks has always been part of the community. We’ve stepped up and made an effort to bring awareness to disasters, causes and other events which impacts us all. It’s our duty as a company with a voice and simply because we’re human. While the debate on climate change, its impact on the environment and natural disasters such as Hurricane Harvey is on-going, we are in the opinion that it doesn’t hurt to be conscious of the environment. Making small changes lead to big impacts. Web hosting being a prime example. Its impact on the environment is huge, and not many people know about this.

What We’re Doing

In support of those in need, GreenGeeks will be donating $1 from every sale in September to the American Red Cross. You can directly make a donation by going to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Donation Page.

GreenGeeks is always striving to ensure that our customers are getting the best web hosting experience possible, from the latest technologies to the best customer service. We wake up every day, constantly thinking of new ideas and speaking to our customers to hear about their needs. We then work hard to deliver.

Today, I’m excited to announce a few improvements that we’ve made to our hosting platform, as we work towards our goal of providing next-generation web hosting services.

These improvements are the initial stages of our plan to provide powerful web hosting solutions that will simplify the way our customers deploy and manage websites.

Here they are…

100% SSD RAID-10 Storage Array’s

We are now deploying 100% RAID-10 SSD-based (Solid State Drives) servers, which is a setup up from our previously SSD-cache based setup. We’ve seen performance increases of 30-35% on several dozen websites that we’ve tested.

PHP7 is now enabled by default

Last year we announced the roll out of PHP7 on our servers. We’re now deploying accounts with PHP7 enabled by default.

Real-time Security Advancements

We have made considerable improvements to our real-time security scanning engine to make use of aggregate data from our entire network along with tweaks to allow for a more smoother, more secure hosting experience.

Scaling built-in.

Hosting accounts that are provisioned onto our new platform will be able to scale resources (I/O, Memory and CPU) to accommodate for growth by simply upgrading to a higher tiered plan.

All new customers will be automatically placed onto the new platform. A transition plan is already in place to migrate our existing customers to the new platform.

Faster Hosting Experience

GreenGeeks has always been at the forefront of providing the latest hosting technology and late last week an e-mail was sent out to customers announcing that every GreenGeek would be receiving a free upgrade that will boost performance and reliability.

So what exactly is being done?

1. Core CPU & Memory Upgrades.

We will be replacing older processors for newer, faster ones and increasing the available memory on all of our servers across all services. This means that our servers will be able to handle even more load and faster than ever before.

2. Introduction of SSD Accelerated Storage.

We will be implementing SSD Accelerated Storage, which makes use of Solid State drives on top of our already powerful and reliable RAID-10 storage array configuration. We’ve been able to decrease page load times by 50% and overall system load by over 150%.

3. Introduction of FastCGI PHP Processing.

Implementation of FastCGI on shared, reseller and premium servers will allow repeatedly accessed PHP scripts, such as WordPress, Joomla, Drupal to be stored and loaded from cache which greatly improves the speed of your website load times.

These upgrades are being made available to customers automatically. Over the next few weeks, as we progress from server to server, customers will receive a scheduled maintenance e-mail that will be required to make these upgrades happen.

Thank you for choosing GreenGeeks as your web hosting provider and look forward to helping your web presence succeed in 2014.

Earlier this year, Internet Corporation of Assigned Names & Numbers (ICANN) published an updated Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA). These changes are scheduled to go into effect January 1st 2014 and will affect all domain owners both with GreenGeeks® or another domain registrar. To review a quick technical summary of the policy change check our our educational article ICANN RAA 2013 Changes. This blog article is a more simplistic explanation including examples of what will take place.

Part of ICANN’s RAA changes require all Whois data be valid and requires domains to use only approved proxy/privacy based services. Whois data is used to determine the owner of any internet resource, such as a domain name or IP address. For web hosting customers this data would include your Name, Address, Telephone and email address and is accessible to the public via a Whois Search. NOTE: GreenGeeks does offer ICANN compliant Whois Privacy services which allow us to proxy your information insuring your privacy. The use of Whois Privacy does not override the need for valid Whois information.

In addition to mandating that valid Whois data is stored on all domain names, additional verification processes have been implemented. In order to remain compliant, GreenGeeks effective Jan. 1st 2014 will begin sending email verification’s to the registrant email address on a domains WHOIS. This process must occur upon a new registration of a domain and/or upon the modification of the Registrant Whois records.

Customers will be given a period of 15 days (starting on the day of Registration or Whois Update) to verify their records or ICANN will suspend the domains access until verified. Note: GreenGeeks has no control in this process. Should a domain verification fail, only ICANN has the control to override your DNS records and serve the domain verification pending page.

To help illustrate the process we have included the following flow chart:

Since GreenGeeks provides Reseller Hosting services and handles our resellers registry services we will send out white-label notices to all customers. Similar emails will be sent directly to GreenGeeks customers as well with our contact information. An example of these notices is below:

ICANN RAA 2013 New Domain Registration Email
ICANN RAA 2013 New Domain Registration Email

ICANN RAA Whois Update Verification
ICANN RAA 2013 Whois Update Verification Email

Please note, at no time will these emails require you to login! Should these verification emails be ignored OR the email bounces ICANN will suspended the domain name until contacted and the Whois is verified. ICANN has provided us with examples of their suspension pages which we have included below:

ICANN RAA 2013 - Domain Suspension Page
ICANN RAA 2013 – Domain Suspension Page

Upon verification, your website will be reverted back to the original nameservers, however DNS Propagation will occur. ICANN has thought of this and provides the following notice to customers upon a successful verification:

ICANN RAA 2013 - Domain Verification Completed
ICANN RAA 2013 – Domain Verification Completed

Additionally, ICANN has notified us that this process will only be required once per Registrant Firstname/Lastname + Email combination. As a result, once completed on your first domain name, all additional domains purchased with GreenGeeks will skip these verification steps. However should you update your Whois records, a verification process will begin effecting all domains associated with that combination.
